International NCEA equivalency and admission to overseas universities

In general, internationally, most universities require foreign students applying for admission to have achieved the university entrance standard set by the country in which the student studied at secondary school. There are some exceptions; for example, students applying to study in America are usually required to sit SATs.

It is important to note that some countries have strict rules about years of study, composition of subjects studied, and the number of subjects a student needs to study. What a student could study in New Zealand to achieve NCEA Level 3 or university entrance may not be acceptable in other countries. Students, parents, agents, and schools must discuss what a student's aspirations are post-school. Should a student wish to apply for university after finishing school, it is imperative to find out about requirements for university entrance in the country in which they want to study and even a specific university's requirements.

New Zealand has formal agreements with several countries about university entrance equivalence. Please follow the attached link to read about acceptance of New Zealand secondary school results in Australia and Britain www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/for-students/ue/tert-admin.html

New Zealand also has an agreement with Thailand which is outlined in the following school circular www.nzqa.govt.nz/nqfdocs/qaops/s08025.doc . The Association of Indian Universities has granted equivalence of NCEA Level 3 to India's university entrance for bachelor degrees. NZQA is working with authorities in Germany to get an agreement about NCEA and university entrance equivalency with the Abitur, Germany's highest school qualification. This site will be updated with that agreement when it is concluded.

Most other countries accept students with New Zealand qualifications on a case by case basis.

Click here for some useful templates to help plan study. There is also information that illustrates which data NZQA supplies, what schools need to supply and what information a student should have in their possession to help them with their tertiary application.

For more information about admission requirements for students with foreign school qualifications wishing to pursue tertiary study at a New Zealand university please refer to the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee website http://www.nzvcc.ac.nz/studying-in-nz/international
